As the leaves begin to change color and the air turns crisp, anglers across the country gear up for one of the most exciting seasons of the year—fall sturgeon fishing. To help us dive into this thrilling pastime, we've invited a seasoned angler, Brandon, renowned for his deep knowledge and success in catching these ancient giants. Let's dive into the insights and tips he has to offer for an unforgettable fall sturgeon fishing experience.

Brandon, an active and devoted angler, consistently provides a terrific fishing experience in his videos. He enjoys fishing extensively, including Adirondack remote ponds, Great Lakes salmon/mackerel, Florida Keys chubs/catfish, excursions to Alaska, two trips to Mexico, and much more in between.

Sturgeon Fishing Tips from Brandon

Tia: Fall seems to be a prime time for sturgeon fishing. Can you explain why that is?

Brandon: Fall is the best time for sturgeon fishing due to cooler water temperatures and their food source is more abundant. When the water is warm, it makes the sturgeon more lethargic. However, in the Columbia River in Oregon/ Washington, Spring is the best time for Sturgeon fishing due to the water temperature and a very abundant Shad run.

Tia: What gear do you need for sturgeon fishing?

Brandon: The number 1 important piece of equipment for sturgeon fishing is any Dr. Fish reel with a 30-50lb drag. Also, having a large spool with the ability to hold 300 yards of line. For example, I highly recommend the Dr. Fish Salt Tiger Reel or the Dr.Fish Longshot Reel. These reels are best paired with a SlimeCat Rod. A 7.5ft-12ft heavy or extra heavy will work best. The shorter rods are better suited for boat use but all can be used anywhere. I recommend using 60-120lb test line, 8/0-10/0 hooks and 6-10lb weights. Check your local regulations for how to set up the rig properly.

Tia: Where do you find and catch sturgeon?

Brandon: Generally, the sturgeon prefers deeper holes with cooler water temperatures.

Tia: What is the best bait for sturgeon?

Brandon: The best bait for sturgeon fishing is Crappie, Rainbow trout, Squid and Pickled Smelt or Squid.

Tia: What time of day is best for sturgeon fishing?

Brandon: The best time to catch sturgeon is in low light conditions.

Tia: Do you have any other tips for sturgeon fishing?

Brandon: When fishing for sturgeon you should be very patient and handle the fish with extreme care. Don't take them out of the water and release them quickly after they have recovered from reeling them in. We must protect these fish to ensure a healthy future for the species. Get out and enjoy fishing for these ancient creatures!
